When have you felt most in balance?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 20, 2008:

balance

I worked with a teacher who taught that life balance is attained through 4 components: work (meaning right livelihood), prayer (meaning what you do to connect to the source and nourish your spirit), play (meaning goal-less activities - things to do 'just for the fun of it') and rest (meaning down time - just 'being' time - not sleep). These four components take on different percentages for each person and can also shift with your own individual cycles. Sometimes in order to feel in balance you might have a higher percentage of work and lower play or rest, etc. It's for us to do a check-in to determine which area needs more attention. Life balance will look different for each person and will vary throughout our own lives.

My current assessment for myself is I need WAY more play and rest and some more prayer. I get flying colors in the work area (my work is right livelihood - yeah - although takes up an inordinant amount of my time and energy).

I have found that it's helpful especially for those high in the work component to make a list of what is play to you? What is rest to you? that way when you have a moment and know you need to do either, you don't have to spend an hour figuring out what to do! (note - one of the items on my play list is reading fiction - these don't need to be complicated things!)

To the question - when have I felt most in balance? When I was a nun living in a monastery  - still doing all the work I do now and very active in the world. I think the difference was that I had a true sanctuary as a home base - my spirit was being nourished daily. I also made play and rest a priority (roller blading on the green belt every day for 5 miles minimum - sitting by the river...). I had more single-pointed focus.

I feel you have hit the nail on the head… a good balance between work play and rest. What helps me to feel balanced in this world is my playground…. going to work is play… playing is playing, etc. A positive attitude towards everything, even when the circumstances do not feel adequate to my thinking or how I thought they should be. Acceptance of all happenings or circumstances leaves room to see through the veil of any sadness, worry, etc…. Another aspect that also helps me is body wisdom during the day to see how I feel doing whatever. Very good insights come when knowing how the body responds to daily activities…  Thanks Jayne…  ; - )

thanks for the comments - Michael (both of you :-) and Nicole. Michael A. - good point on being aware of how the body is responding to daily activities - a good barometer to whether we're in or out of harmony (balance).

Hi Jayne,

As you know I've been battling exhaustion lately.  And paying attention to body is paramount when your exhausted, as is play.  Just now I realized that I was losing today to exhaustion and wondering why I wasn't moving more.  And I realized that I needed to let go of the work part of the day that I was trying to accomplish and just do something for fun.  It's hard to be in the fun place for me when I'm so worried about what's happening to the California landscape.  But it does me no good at all to be anxious about the fires – so I chanted a bit and then dedicated the merit of that and am now moving slowly through the day and on to something fun – no work today.  Balance, thanks for your advice, it's always wonderful.  Lois

hello Lois - i sent some prayers your way for the fires earlier today (had read about them in your post and your concerns). Balance…today for me it is mostly about rest - allowing the energy to just move me where it will…few solid goals…may go to the river at dusk…balance and alignment is huge in my life now…fairly essential. many blessings to you.
